The Hobsons Bay Toy Library was one of the first toy libraries in Australia, beginning as Williamstown Educational Toy Library in 1976, becoming Newport Toy Library in 1988, and then Hobsons Bay Toy Library in 1995. Until then, membership and finances had been up and down, in spite of the best efforts of the volunteers who ran it. Since 1995 it has thrived, with more Council funding, paid Co-ordinators, and the ultimate mark of success - a new branch opening at Laverton in 2002.

The Newport Branch of the Hobsons Bay Toy Library is now one of largest and most sophisticated toy libraries in Victoria, with over 200 member families, paid Co-ordinators and more than 1,600 fun and educational toys in the collection.
